Ramesh Balasubramaniam

Ramesh Balasubramaniam is an Associate Professor in Human Kinetics at the University of Ottawa. He obtained his Ph.D. in Experimental Psychology from the University of Connecticut in 2000. He was a Research fellow at the University of Montreal (2000-2001) and at the Medical Research Council, UK (2002-2004). He has been at the University of Ottawa since Fall 2004. His research interests are in the areas of motor coordination and timing in piano playing. Using 3-D motion capture and eye-tracking technologies, he investigates predictive aspects of motor control during music reading, piano learning and performance.

Dr. Balasubramaniam has been named University Research Chair in Human Motor Control Neuroscience (2007-2012). He is the recipient of the Excellence in Teaching award from the Faculty of Health Sciences (2006) and Excellence in Education award from the University of Ottawa (2007). His research is funded by grants from Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI), Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) and the Ministry of Research and Innovation (MRI), Ontario. Dr. Balasubramaniam’s work also gets routinely coverage in the media in prestigious programs like CBC Radio’s Quirks & Quarks and Radio-Canada’s Découverte.
