Bruno Emond

Dr. Emond’s research focuses on critical issues for broadband e-learning and fundamental issues related to the modelling of human cognition. His research directly addresses two crucial barriers to widespread adoption of broadband video for e-learning: 1) lack of tools to help people find the content they need within a video repository, and 2) lack of knowledge of the cognitive demands placed on learners when interacting with streamed video over broadband networks. Dr. Emond’s scientific focus on cognitive modelling technology is based on the development of models and extensions to the ACT-R (Atomic Component of Thought) cognitive architecture for the purpose of analysing human performance data through simulations. In the area of human-computer interaction, cognitive modelling can help to predict what aspects of a particular device might be easy or difficult to use and/or learn, and also to develop better scientific explanations of how people interact with computer systems. Dr. Bruno Emond is an associate research officer at the Institute for Information Technology of the National Research Council of Canada. He is also an associate professor in the Department of Education at the University of Quebec en Outaouais, and an adjunct research professor in Institute for Cognitive Science at Carleton University. Dr. Emond holds a B.A. and a M.A. in philosophy (logic and semantics) from the University of Montreal, and a Ph.D. in educational psychology (applied cognitive science) from McGill University.
